Woodlands provide many opportunities in Wales and beyond.

Restoring existing woodlands and creating new woodlands help to tackle climate change, halt the decline in biodiversity, build the resilience of our ecosystems and ensure the productive potential of woodlands.  

The National Forest in Wales has made woodlands a high priority for the Welsh Environment. The National Forest in Wales is aiming to develop a high-quality connected woodland which will increase our nation’s access to and time spent in woodlands supporting their health and well-being and attracting visitors to Wales.

ERAMMP was commissioned to carry out a National Forest Evidence Review by the Welsh Government with the aim of providing key evidence about the potential advantages and disadvantages of creating woodlands, expanding woodlands and managing under-managed woodlands, to provide an evidence base to inform National Forest development for Wales.

Woodland monitoring review
The report reviews the ongoing monitoring of woodlands and proposes a set of recommendations to inform the commissioning of the ERAMMP field survey due in 2020-2021 to ensure the policy requirements and priorities of Welsh Government Forest Policy and NRW are met. This report formed a groundwork for the National Forest Evidence Pack.

Mapping hedges with satelite & lidar
The Welsh Government (WG) uses data on hedges and field boundaries for a variety of purposes including scheme delivery, environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance. This project explored the potential for high resolution satellite data to provide accurate spatial data on hedge location and length.
